Gunmen's "royal army" ID adds twist to Malaysia border standoff

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - About 100 armed men holed up in a village in the eastern Malaysian state of Sabah identified themselves as the "royal army" of the Sultanate of Sulu in the southern Philippines, adding more mystery to a bizarre border standoff.

Malaysian officials said on Thursday they suspected the intruders were a faction of a Philippine Muslim rebel group, while Philippine officials said they were unarmed Filipinos who had been promised land.

The drama on Borneo island has threatened to stir tension between the Southeast Asian neighbors whose ties have been periodically frayed by security and migration problems caused by a porous sea border.

The Malaysian police chief told reporters late on Thursday that the group had identified themselves as representing the Sultanate of Sulu, a string of islands in the southern Philippines that has a historic claim to Malaysia's Sabah state.

"We have sent a team to negotiate with them. Discussion is proceeding well and we have told them to leave Sabah peacefully, as we do not want any situation which can threaten the security of the people," Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar told a news conference, according to state news agency Bernama.

He said the group had agreed to leave Sabah once their demands were met, without specifying the demands.

"So far, the situation is not tense and they (the group) appear to be behaving well," Ismail said in a separate statement to Bernama.

The Philippine embassy in Kuala Lumpur has sent a team to Sabah to coordinate with local authorities and to ascertain the identities of the group.

Malaysia pays a token amount to the Sultanate of Sulu each year for the "rental" of Sabah state - an arrangement that stretches back to British colonial times.

In 2000, a group of militants from the southern Philippines kidnapped 21 tourists from the Sabah diving resort of Sipadan.

In 1985, 11 people were killed when gunmen believed to be from the southern Philippines entered Lahad Datu in Sabah, shooting at random before robbing the local branch of Standard Chartered Bank.

Kerry: Response to NKorea will send Iran a message

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The world must show its resolve in the face of North Korea's nuclear provocations or risk emboldening Iran, which is under scrutiny over its uranium enrichment program, Secretary of State John Kerry said Wednesday.

Kerry said nations must agree on a "swift, clear, strong and credible response" to Pyongyang's third nuclear test and the authoritarian regime's "continued flaunting of its obligations."

In defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions, the latest issued last month, North Korea on Tuesday detonated a nuclear device at a remote underground site. It is seen as a key step toward its goal of building a bomb small enough to be fitted on a missile capable of striking the United States.

Iran, like North Korea, is also under stiff sanctions, and negotiations with the West over its nuclear program have similarly stalled.

Iran maintains the program is peaceful, for generating energy and for medical research, not for weapons. It said Wednesday that it has begun installing a new generation of centrifuges that will allow it to vastly increase its pace of uranium enrichment in defiance of U.N. calls to halt such activities.

There has been speculation that North Korea and Iran could be cooperating on missile and nuclear development. Kerry did not draw such a connection but did say the cases were linked because they both concerned nonproliferation.

"It's important for the world to have credibility with respect to our nonproliferation efforts," Kerry told reporters after meeting Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh at the State Department.

"Just as it's impermissible for North Korea to pursue this kind of reckless effort, so we have said it's impermissible with respect to Iran. What our response is with respect to this will have an impact on all other nonproliferation efforts."

The U.N. Security Council has issued three separate resolutions on North Korea, in response to its nuclear and missile tests since 2006. The latest resolution, which tightened sanctions, followed a December satellite launch that the U.S. says could serve to develop the North's ballistic missile capability.

The resolution warned of "significant action" if Pyongyang conducted another rocket launch or a nuclear test.

"If you are going to say things, they have to mean something. And to mean something you have to be prepared to follow up, and that's exactly what we are prepared to do," Kerry said.

In an emergency session Tuesday, the Security Council unanimously said the nuclear test poses "a clear threat to international peace and security" and pledged further action. It remains to be seen, however, whether China, the North's ally, will sign on to any new, binding global sanctions.

Yahoo's latest mobile acquisition mirrors Marissa Mayer's final efforts at Google

SUNNYVALE -- Yahoo (YHOO) picked up Tuesday where it left off in 2012, acquiring the team behind another mobile application, the third such move since Marissa Mayer arrived as CEO in July and one that mirrors Mayer's final Google (GOOG) effort.

Yahoo confirmed Tuesday that it had purchased Alike for an undisclosed sum, bringing to Yahoo a team that developed

a mobile application focused on suggesting nearby businesses a user may enjoy based on their previous preferences.

"The Alike team created an app that focuses on personalization -- using the restaurants and places you like to find the ones you'll love. We were very impressed by the team and their approach to building personalized experiences," Yahoo said in a statement Tuesday.

Mayer, who was employee No. 20 at Google and worked in a variety of positions at the Mountain View search leader, spent her last two years with the company working on Google's local efforts -- combining the acquisitions Zagat and Frommer's into different Google products to give users the ability to find info on nearby restaurants and other businesses as

well as opinions on those entities.

The Alike app for iPhone asked users to input their favorite destinations, then would tell them of similar businesses near to their current location. That type of offering is popular in Silicon Valley beyond Google, with San Francisco-based Yelp staking its reputation on user-generated reviews of local offerings, and Facebook recently offering up a search option that will help users find businesses popular with their friends.

The app was founded by Maria Zhang, previously of Microsoft and Zillow, who has said in interviews that the app is more founded on the idea of "Big Data" than local recommendations.

"We've painstakingly collected hundreds of terabytes of data and crafted complex algorithms to really understand the essence of a place. We compare these essences to discover similar places. The great thing about this big data approach is that there is no waiting for a critical mass of 500 of your friends or 10 million other people for the service to be useful," Zhang said in an interview with GeekWire in October.

Yahoo will use those abilities to build out its mobile team, a focus of Mayer's since arriving at Yahoo. In her first conference call with analysts in October, Mayer said that "at some point, at least half our technical workforce should be working on mobile ... because Yahoo should be a predominantly mobile company."

Just three days after that statement, Mayer backed it up with the purchase of Stamped, a similar app to Alike that allowed users to "stamp" restaurants and other businesses or media they enjoy for friends to see and share. The leaders of Stamped -- Robby Stein, who once worked for Mayer as a product manager at Google, Bart Stein and Kevin Palms -- were seen as the leaders of Yahoo's new mobile efforts, with Yahoo exec Adam Cahan saying in a blog post that the crew would "create a new center of mobile product development for Yahoo."

Alike joins OnTheAir, a San Francisco video-conferencing startup that Yahoo acquired in December, as mobile acquisitions that will work with the Stamped team to build Yahoo's mobile efforts.

The Alike app will no longer be supported by the Seattle-based group that created it, as they move to Yahoo's offices in Sunnyvale and San Francisco.

"We believe that distilled information, deeply personalized and made accessible anytime and anywhere, is what makes mobile experiences a part of our customers' daily lives," the Alike team said in a post on the company's website Tuesday.

Yahoo stock, which has struggled for years as the company has run through a series of CEOs, hit its highest price since 2008 for the second consecutive trading session Tuesday. At 11 a.m. Pacific time, less than two hours after the acquisition was announced, shares were trading for $21.34, a gain of 44 cents, or 2.1 percent.

Vuzix's Wrap 1200AR glasses do 3D augmented reality for $1,499

Vuzix Wrap 1200AR glasses

We saw Vuzix shift to a more Google Glass-esque set of smart glasses at CES in January, but it looks like it's not about to abandon the more traditional wrap-around headsets it's been churning out year after year. The company's latest is the Wrap 1200AR, which is a lot like its Wrap 1200VR headset, but with a focus on augmented reality instead of virtual reality. That means you'll get two (VGA) cameras mounted on the front to capture stereoscopic video of your surroundings, along with a pair of displays (852 x 480 each) to view that video -- augmented or otherwise -- in 3D. As with the Wrap 1200VR, the glasses also come equipped with head-tracking technology, but they don't come cheap. These will set you back a hefty $1,499, and are available to order now.

US wrestlers blindsided by Olympic ouster | National Sports | The ...

IOC Meetings

FILE - In this Monday, Aug. 6, 2012 file photo Amer Hrustanovic of Austria competes against Damian Janikowski of Poland, in blue, during the 84-kg Greco-Roman wrestling competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics, in London. An official familiar with the decision says IOC leaders have dropped wrestling from the program for the 2020 Olympics. In a surprise decision Tuesday Feb. 12, 2013, the official tells The Associated Press that the IOC executive board decided to retain modern pentathlon and remove wrestling instead.

Paul Sancya, File ? AP Photo

Rulon Gardner's epic upset of Russian wrestling great Alexander Karelin in 2000 remains one of the most compelling moments of the modern Olympics.

Starting in 2020, youngsters looking to Gardner and Karelin for inspiration won't have a chance to excel on the sport's biggest stage.

Gardner and nearly everyone else associated with the sport in the U.S. were jolted Tuesday when International Olympic Committee leaders dropped wrestling from the Summer Games.

The move is set to take effect for the 2020 Olympics and eliminates a sport that's been a staple of both the ancient and modern games.

"It's the IOC trying to change the Olympics to make it more mainstream and more viewer-friendly instead of sticking to what they founded the Olympics on, and that was basically amateur sports," Gardner told The Associated Press by phone from Logan, Utah. "To get the death penalty out of nowhere."

The decision by the IOC to phase out wrestling will leave the U.S. without one of its most successful Olympic sports.

The only sports in which the Americans have won more medals than wrestling is swimming and track and field - and those two have far more medal opportunities.

Americans have won a record 113 freestyle Olympic medals, by far the most of any nation. Though the U.S. had slipped in recent Olympic cycles, it bounced back with a pair of London Games gold medalists in Jordan Burroughs - possibly the best wrestler in the world - and Jake Varner.

"I do think wrestling people are the strongest in the world, and they're resilient. And we'll come out of whatever happens. But short term, yeah, it's sad," 2004 Olympic gold medalist and Penn State coach Cael Sanderson said.

"I just think of the kids in our program that dream of being Olympic champions. And to think that now that's no longer an opportunity just so the IOC stay fresh and continue to rotate sports and whatever their plan is - it's tough to think about."

Wrestling is also one of the most popular youth sports in the U.S. The National Federation of State High School Associations reports that the sport was sixth among prep boys with nearly 275,000 competing in 2010-11.

"Wrestling is the Olympics. It's the toughest, most grueling, most demanding and most humbling sport there is. It teaches you so many life lessons," said Jake Herbert, who wrestled for the U.S. in the London Games.

Wrestling will now join seven other sports in applying for inclusion in 2020. The others are a combined bid from baseball and softball, karate, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu. They will be vying for a single opening in 2020.

USA Wrestling executive director Richard Bender calls his sport "one of the most diverse," with nearly 200 nations from all continents participating.

"It is an inclusive sport which provides opportunities worldwide, regardless of geography, race, gender or physical characteristics," he said. "We look forward to telling the story about wrestling to the International Committee leadership and the entire world about our great sport and why it should be part of the Olympic movement forever."

The IOC executive board will meet in May in St. Petersburg, Russia, to decide which sport or sports to propose for 2020. The final vote will be in September in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

"Given the history and tradition of wrestling, and its popularity and universality, we were surprised when the decision was announced," U.S. Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun said. "It is important to remember that today's action is a recommendation, and we hope that there will be a meaningful opportunity to discuss the important role that wrestling plays in the sports landscape both in the United States and around the world."

Rejoining the Olympic roster for 2020 seems unlikely. Still, former Olympic champion and current Iowa coach Tom Brands said the international wrestling community needs to fight this ouster.

"It's one of those things where your first thoughts are pretty bad," Brands said. "There's nothing more sacred to living than learning to overcome struggle. Wrestling is that equivalent, more than any other form of sport, recreation or entertainment. It's worse than death because you can't control death, and this is something that maybe we can control or could have controlled. We need to look forward to May and the process in September."

Reaction to the move was swift on social media. A Facebook page titled "Save Olympic Wrestling" was started Tuesday morning and had nearly 5,000 members by noon. A number of fellow Olympians also displayed their displeasure over the decision on Twitter by using the hashtag (hash)SaveOlympicWrestling.

Wrestling can be tough for the average Olympics fan to follow, which is why it rarely earns a TV slot in prime time. Its scoring system can seem complicated and arcane to newcomers. The medal stand is often dominated by athletes who aren't nearly as marketable as gymnasts and swimmers.

Still, it produces memorable characters like Karelin, the prolifically strong three-time Olympic champion and hero in his native Russia. There are also American icons like Sanderson and Gardner, who beat Karelin and later survived both a plane crash and frostbite.

"It just seems like wrestling, if we don't fight we're going to die," Gardner said. "At this point, it's time for everybody to man up and support the program."
