Tyga, Trae Tha Truth To Swag Out On 'RapFix Live' Today!

Tune in today at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com to catch a special introduction from DJ Whoo Kid and G-Unit signee Paris.
By Rob Markman

It's been a long time coming, but Tyga has finally released his Young Money debut, Careless World: Rise of the Last King, and to celebrate, the L.A. spitter will visit "RapFix Live" on Wednesday (February 29).

It hasn't been an easy road for Tyga, who released his independent debut LP, No Introduction, in 2008, but after hooking up with Lil Wayne's YMCMB crew, he has amassed a series of wins. His biggest single, "Rack City," has already peaked at #3 on the Billboard Rap Songs chart and spawned a high-profile remix featuring T.I., Young Jeezy, Wale, Fabolous and Meek Mill.

While tracks like the Lil Wayne-assisted "Faded" and "King & Queens" featuring Wale and Nas have fans excited about the album, which was released February 21, there is still some controversy surrounding the release. It seems Tyga failed to clear a sample from Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech and the physical CD was pulled from major retail chains like Best Buy and Target. The snafu will no doubt put a dent in Tyga's first-week sales, but he is still projected to sell about 75,000 copies digitally.

Houston rapper Trae Tha Truth will also appear on this week's "RapFix Live" to make a special announcement. Emerging from the underground rap crew the Screwed Up Click, Trae has made quite a name for himself in the streets. With a number of solo albums, mixtapes and collaboration LPs like 2003's A--holes by Nature, with Z-Ro, Trae has become one of the most respected MCs in the game. His 2011 LP Street King featured contributions from Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Wyclef Jean and Wiz Khalifa, to name a few. Now Trae is ready to take a new step in his career, but you have to tune in to "RapFix Live" on Wednesday to find out.

Finally, DJ Whoo Kid is set to hit the famous red couch with newly inked G-Unit Signee Paris. Fans may have heard the femcee spitting on 50 Cent's latest mixtape project, Big 10.

Catch Tyga, DJ Whoo Kid and Trae tha Truth on "RapFix Live" Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, and be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtags #RapFixLive. Send your questions for the artists to @MTVRapFiX!

'Smart' stadium goes high-tech to serve fans

Each fan who visits Miami's Sun Life Stadium has individual parking habits, bathroom break patterns, favorite concession stand foods and ideal seats from which to watch the big game or live concert event.? Stadium managers hope to respond to the wants and needs of every single visitor by teaming up with IBM to track the ebb and flow of humanity inside the 75,000-seat building.

A first step comes from monitoring anything that might affect the crowds that come to enjoy WrestleMania in the spring or a Miami Dolphins NFL game in the fall. The stadium's new IBM's Intelligent Operations Center allow the staff to respond almost instantly to changes in parking, weather forecasts and even shortages of beer or nachos at a specific concession stand ? the first real-world test is set for an soccer game between Mexico and Columbia on Wednesday.

"The stadium is really a microcosm of what we're experiencing with smarter cities," said Michael Gerentine, global vice president of channels and midmarket marketing at IBM. "Traffic, security challenges, weather, crowd control; a lot of these issues exist in a small or large cities."

Stadium staff can already use IBM's system to quickly redirect fans to free parking spaces and shut off full parking lots among the 24,000 available spaces. But the stadium could someday also have sensors to track each incoming car, rather than put someone on the roof to count traffic using a pair of binoculars, said Tery Howard, chief technology officer for the Miami Dolphins.

"We compete with the high-definition TV within the comfort of their homes," Howard told InnovationNewsDaily. "We don't want it to be an effort for fans to come out because of issues with parking and standing in line to buy a hot dog."

IBM's system helps the stadium manage the world's largest collection of venues selling everything from tickets to T-shirts. Staff members receive alerts about certain sales or foot-traffic benchmarks being hit, and can move quickly to enforce the cutoff on alcohol sales at the end of the third quarter during Miami Dolphin games.

The latest weather forecasting also plays a role in a city where rainstorms can break out in the middle of a sunny day. IBM's center gives up-to-the-minute information about the possibilities of bad weather in a 10-mile radius and lightning strikes in a 5-mile radius around the stadium.

"Operations staff is ecstatic because they can be at command post or walking around stadium getting alerts when thresholds are hit," Howard explained. "They can go online and see the pulse of the stadium at any given time from when gates open to when gates close."

Howard praised IBM's system for fitting in on top of the stadium's "legacy" systems without disrupting any of its normal ticketing or sales. The IBM Intelligent Operations Center simply sits on top of everything so that it can scrape and grab data ? information that could someday help the stadium respond to individual fans rather than just the overall crowd.

"When dealing with 75,000 potential fans for a four-hour production, we strive to personalize the experience for the masses," Howard said. "That's what we want to achieve."

New Energy-Dense Battery Could Enable Long-Distance Electric Cars

envia-anode-scanning-electron-microscope-viewNOVEL ELECTRODE: By adding silicon to the anode, pictured here, among other improvements, Envia has more than doubled the energy density of current lithium-ion batteries. Image: Courtesy of Envia

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md.?A company founded in the Palo Alto public library has taken a dose of government money and technology and turned it into the most energy-dense battery ever. Envia System's new lithium-ion battery packs roughly twice as much energy per gram as present batteries, the company will announce here at the third annual summit of the Advanced Research Projects Agency?Energy (ARPA?e).

"We achieved 400 watt-hours per kilogram," explains materials scientist Sujeet Kumar, Envia co-founder and chief technology officer. "We have made a 40 ampere cell in a large format that automakers can recognize and use," and one that has been validated by independent energy density tests at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Crane, Ind.

With a $4 million grant from ARPA?e, the Envia technology builds on work done at Argonne National Laboratory that found that including manganese in a mix of materials for the cathode?the electrode to which the lithium ions flock?better energy densities could be achieved. The team then switched focus to the anode?the electrode from which lithium ions flow to produce the electric current?and boosted its performance by incorporating silicon along with the typical graphite.

By blending silicon with carbon, the researchers claim to have gotten around the problems of silicon anodes that have disabled other batteries ability to charge and discharge time and time again. Simply put, silicon swells. "It will hardly last 10 cycles because of the high volumetric changes," admits Kumar. But by encasing it in a carbon coating?as well as interlacing carbon fibers?the Envia team argues it has surmounted that problem and its battery has cycled 400 times?and counting. "Even if the silicon pulverizes in the first cycle, connectivity is maintained through the carbon fibers," Kumar adds.

That leaves so-called "thermal runaway," an engineering euphemism for batteries bursting into flame?a persistent problem with energy-dense storage devices based on lithium-ion technology. This is particularly true in cars where batteries must undergo a test in which an 8-millimeter nail penetrates the battery at speed. Envia claims its batteries pass that test. "It's mainly that the cells are much thinner," Kumar says. "It's very easy to remove the heat," though it will be up to each individual automaker whether they want to employ air or liquid cooling of battery packs.

The slim, energy-dense batteries developed at an Envia center in China could reduce the number needed per car by half. And the batteries are cheap at $125 per kilowatt-hour, less than half what current batteries cost, an expense that contributes some 65 percent of the cost of an electric car. But, in addition to further independent testing, the Envia battery must now embark on the multi-year process of testing by actual car-makers. GM is an investor, but Envia declines to identify who is interested. "We are working with all the brand name [carmakers] around the world," says Atul Kapadia, Envia chairman and CEO. The idea is to either form joint ventures to produce the batteries in tandem or to license the technology to pre-existing partners.

But, assuming a single nail doesn't bring down the new technology, the battery could boost the range of electric vehicles, such as GM's Chevy Volt. The more watt-hours per kilogram, the farther an electric car can travel. That means a Nissan LEAF boasting Envia's batteries might be able to travel the 300 miles between St. Louis and Chicago on a single $10 charge, rather than the roughly 80 it can travel today. "We expect Envia's next generation lithium-ion battery will revolutionize the [electric vehicle] industry by eliminating the three remaining barriers to mass adoption: cost, range and safety," Kumar said in a statement announcing the breakthrough. "The ability to drive up to 300 miles on a single charge will eliminate 'range anxiety.'"

Home Health Care: Surviving With Copd

Everyone has the occasional cough. It usually comes with a cold and goes away with little concern. It is when a nagging cough is accompanied by shortness of breath and regular wheezing that most people become very concerned about their health. These are some of the symptoms of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). According to statistics from the American Lung Association, more than 12 million Americans have a diagnosis of COPD, the group of lung diseases that includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. There are likely another 12 million with it that are undiagnosed.

Causes
There are many different causes of COPD. Most of them involve frequent, constant and prolonged inhalation of particles, such as tobacco smoke, dust and noxious fumes. The number one cause of COPD is smoking tobacco. For non-smokers, pollution, cooking gases and secondhand smoke are prominent causes of COPD.

Effects
It is the root cause of several more serious medical conditions, and will . These include heart failure, collapsed lung, pneumonia and malnutrition. The early effects include an increase of mucus with coughing, frequent bouts of pneumonia and bronchitis. COPD causes patients to become fatigued easily, making it difficult to breathe after moderate or even mild activity. Eventually, COPD patients may need frequent hospitalization or at-home health care. In severe cases, home hospice care may be useful.

Treatments
Many sufferers of COPD have a combination of respiratory ailments, which makes their conditions more difficult to endure and harder to treat. COPD can be fatal, and there is no cure. Its progress can be slowed down with lifestyle changes, medication and sometimes surgery. This may include oxygen therapy, lung transplants and use of steroids and inhalers.

Coping
Living with COPD on a daily basis requires cooperation between household family members, patients and their doctors. Some may need in home health care or private nursing for daily assistance. Patients may need assistance from friends and family members to quit smoking. Those who quit smoking have the greatest benefit, as the disease will slow down dramatically. The patient?s doctor may provide a patch to help someone quit more quickly and easily. Another lifestyle change that will help those with COPD is a change in diet. Eating a nutritious diet of fruits, vegetables and lean meats will ensure high protein, vitamins and minerals, which are important for staying as healthy as possible. Those with unwanted weight loss issues may find it necessary to eat more calories with healthy foods.

The Dangers of Drug Addiction In The United States | New Health ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Drug obsession is a complicated disorder that will involve virtually every facet of a people functioning: in the family, at work and school, and in the neighborhood. Because of addictions intricacy and pervasive results, drug obsession treatment usually must involve many components. Some of those parts focus directly on the people drug taking; others, like employment coaching, focus on restoring the dependent individual to productive membership in the family and society, enabling her or him to experience the rewards associated with abstinence.

Treatment for drug abuse and addiction is delivered in numerous different settings using a spread of behavior and pharmacological approaches. In the United States, more than 13,000 specialised drug treatment facilities provide counseling, behavior treatment, medication, case management, and other sorts of services to folks with substance use disorders.

Together with specialised drug treatment facilities, substance abuse and addiction are treated in doctors offices and psychological fitness hospitals by a spread of providers, including advisors, doctors, psychiatric doctors, psychological specialists, nurses, and social workers. These employees can be found at a variety of local residential drug rehab treatment centers. Treatment is delivered in outpatient, inpatient, and residential settings. Although categorical treatment approaches regularly are linked with particular treatment settings, a variety of therapeutic interventions or services can be included in any particular setting.

Because drug abuse and addiction are major public health issues, a large bit of drug treatment is subsidized by local, State, and Federal governments. Private and employer-subsidized health plans also may provide coverage for treatment of addiction and its medical implications. Sadly, managed care has led to shorter average stays, while a historic lack of or insufficient coverage for drug abuse treatment has curtailed the amount of operational programs. The most recent passage of parity for insurance cover of mental well-being and drug use Problems will maybe improve this situation.

General Classes of Treatment Programs

Investigations into obsession treatment sometimes have classified programs into 1 or 2 general types or modalities. Treatment approaches and individual programs continue to evolve and diversify, and many programs today don't fit neatly into standard drug obsession treatment classifications.

Jason Hammond is a writer and analyst who is studying the effects of drug abuse among peers and families. He has written about topics covering drug and alcohol rehab centers and abuse. Additionally, he studies the positive results of drug addicts attending drug rehab treatment facilities.

What Are Online Masters Degrees? AA Degree | Education College

AA Degree

AA Degree

Online masters degrees are higher education college degrees that are earned over the Internet. In order to apply, individuals must first have a bachelor?s degree in the same field of study as the masters degree they wish to obtain. Masters degrees are offered in many different fields of education. Individuals can receive a degree in accounting, business, management, education and even healthcare.

In recent years the reputation of online masters degrees has grown, making them more attractive and affordable than ever before.

The biggest benefit is the convenience. Individuals that hold a full time job can still complete their degree in record time because the classes and studies are all offered online on a schedule that can be laid out to fit your individual needs.

Another benefit to earning online masters degrees is the increase in income afforded by the degree. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, individuals with a masters degree earn over 170 percent more than their co-workers who only possess a bachelor?s degree or associates degree.

The main drawback to online masters degrees programs is that they are done entirely online. This can be a problem if a student needs extra help with a particular lesson. It can also be hard for a student to get the appropriate personal attention they sometimes need.

To address this problem many online masters degrees programs now offer student tutors or mentor that are available through email to address a student?s personal needs.

For individuals interested in furthering an already established career, an online masters degree offer the best education at the best price and level of convenience.

Pitcher Yu Darvish gets going at last with Rangers

By JANIE McCAULEY

AP Baseball Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:01 p.m. ET Feb. 23, 2012

SURPRISE, Arizona (AP) -The Texas Rangers would love to hear Yu Darvish's best go at "y'all."

"Some Texas twang, any type of slang," said fellow starter Colby Lewis, who spent time pitching in Japan in the opposite division as Darvish. "He'll have fun. It's going to be good."

Give him a little time, gang. Darvish most certainly would prefer to show off his powerful arm and remarkable athletic abilities before he delves into learning the lingo of the Lone Star State or belting out "Deep in the Heart of Texas."

Darvish, with his shaggy, orange-tinted hair and a dark goatee, pulled a blue long-sleeved Rangers workout shirt over his head Thursday and chatted up teammate Justin Miller as nearly everybody in the clubhouse eagerly watched. At 6-foot-5, he's quite a presence even before considering that the Rangers spent more than $107 million this winter to land him.

Texas will be dealing with some "Yusanity" this season.

"I guess this comes with success and all that," manager Ron Washington said Thursday, before taking the field to watch Darvish himself. "People are interested in the Texas Rangers so I guess we just have to deal with it."

The team's prize offseason pickup looked plenty comfortable in his new surroundings on the first day for pitchers and catchers at Surprise Stadium, where dozens of Japanese reporters arrived early to record the right-hander's every move.

No question his fame reaches cult status.

Fans lined the area around the bullpen to catch a glimpse and autograph hounds were relentless in their efforts, swarming until a claustrophobic circle formed around the pitcher as he wrapped up his work day. Darvish received a police escort between practice fields.

"I directed traffic," joked pitching coach Mike Maddux. "It's a little postseason pandemonium here in spring training. A lot of guys are well known. Sometimes you run into somebody who's famous. That's what we're dealing with, someone who's famous."

Texas personnel provided a detailed schedule for the star Japanese pitcher's highly anticipated first day: from when and where he would stretch and warm up to his first fundamental drill and then his initial bullpen session.

Darvish threw for five minutes in the bullpen followed by five minutes on the mound against live hitters, throwing 19 pitches during that session against a pair of minor leaguers - tossing an array of fastballs to both sides of the plate, sliders, curveballs, changeups and even one split-finger.

Catcher Mike Napoli asked to catch Darvish on Day 1, when slugger Josh Hamilton also was out on the field and signing autographs.

"I'm just excited to get the chance to see him pitch for the first time aside from the footage on ESPN," new Rangers reliever Joe Nathan said. "His work ethic seems to be outstanding. We had a chance to talk yesterday. He enjoys getting in the weight room as much as he enjoys pitching. That will help him pitch a long time and he should adjust a lot quicker."

Darvish's father, Farsad, is in the Arizona desert to help his son through that process. The baseball part of Darvish's life will take care of itself, his father said.

"He seems to be doing OK," the elder Darvish said. "I don't really talk to him about his baseball career. That he gets adjusted and used to the culture is my concern. He's been in the big leagues in Japan and gets a lot of attention, so to him this is normal."

The two-time reigning AL champion Rangers don't envision communication problems with the 25-year-old Darvish, and Washington has no plans to learn Japanese - for one, he doesn't see it fitting it into his already hectic spring schedule.

"I don't want to trash the language," Washington quipped. "I'll use my universal baseball language. I trash the English language."

Washington won't say what day Darvish will first pitch in Cactus League action or guess how many wins he will earn as a rookie. There will be huge expectations given he signed a $56 million, six-year contract and the Rangers paid his Japanese club $51.7 million just to have the chance to acquire him.

"I think we're all excited about seeing him throw, watching him do his work," Rangers president and CEO Nolan Ryan said. "I think watching video on him I have an expectation of what he's going to be like so I don't think it's going to be really much different from what I've seen in the videos of him. But you know just seeing his delivery, watching him from different angles and that kind of stuff. Obviously everybody that's been involved in this process is anxious to see that."

The brass lined up behind the fence to observe Darvish's initial session. He impressed all right - and he was only going at 80 percent according to Napoli and the pitching coaches. When he faced top prospect Jurickson Profar and Ryan Strausborger the protective L screen stood right in front of the mound as a precaution.

Napoli gave Darvish a high-five and a hug after they were done.

Seattle resident and Mariners fan David Duggan showed up Thursday with Darvish's World Baseball Classic jersey hoping to get it signed for his 20-month-old daughter, Hannah.

"When Ichiro came I didn't realize the magnitude of it," Duggan said. "This could be like Ichiro mania or Dice-K mania."

Darvish's routine has been carefully mapped out. He will throw every other day and pitch in an intrasquad game on Day 9.

"He handles himself well," Maddux said. "He was there and eager to go. He didn't want to wait to throw. That's refreshing."

Chinese service sells fake 'sent from my iPhone' messages

6 hrs.

Just when you didn't think that the world of knockoff products could get any stranger, Chinese merchants start offering a service which allows people to pay for fake "sent from my iPhone" messages.

The Financial Times' Kathrin Hille reports that?merchants on Taobao, a Chinese consumer-to-consumer online market place, are offering to hack into the accounts of folks who are using QQ???an instant messaging tool which is particularly popular in the region ??and "make it appear as if they were sending their posts from an iPhone."

The service costs roughly one dollar per month and all someone needs to do is send his or her QQ username and password to one of the merchants offering to add the popular Apple tagline.

It's a bit difficult to believe that anyone?would not only hand over his or her instant messaging service login information to a stranger, but also pay for such a silly service. Then again, "[t]he iPhone is too expensive," reminds one of the posts on Taobao. "If you don?t want to spend that money, then fake it!"

Fresh from your printer: 3-D dinosaur bones!

Paleontologist Kenneth Lacovara is looking to print out some robot dinosaurs.?

He wants to use a 3-D printer to create dinosaur bones, based on real fossils, to use in scaled-down robo-saurs. In the same way that document programs can shrink a page to 50 or 20 or 2 percent of its original size, a 3-D printing program can shrink a blueprint for 100-foot-long skeletons to a more manageable size for study.

The assembled dino-bots will help Lacovara, who is based at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pa., study how 60- to 80-ton sauropods stood, walked and mated. "It's great," he said, "because I physically can't lift up (and piece together) the bones."

"It's this new frontier in paleontology," he told InnovationNewsDaily.?

Lacovara will use lasers to scan original, fossilized bones. Then a 3-D printer will make copies of the bones' shape, based on the scans. The printer works by laying down thin layers of plastic, gradually building up the layers into a 3-D object.?

Lacovara has already printed a few bones of a Paralititan dinosaur, one of the most massive dinosaur species ever discovered. He, along with an engineering colleague at Drexel, will hook up the printed skeletons with artificial muscles and tendons, creating robots they can watch move. He hopes to have a working dino limb, either of Paralititan or another large sauropod, by the end of the year.

He's not the only biologist who has started using 3-D printing in his research. Others are using the technology to study the bones and movement of fluorescent deep-sea fish and humankind's primate ancestors. The Canadian Museum of Nature in Ontario has its own 3-D printing center for dinosaur fossils.?

Besides their resizing ability, 3-D printers help researchers create more models more easily than ever. Usually, scientists who want model bones have to painstakingly create molds from original fossils, then use the molds to cast artificial bones. The molds wear out after five or six uses, Lacovara said. On the other hand, a 3-D printer can continue to print crisp, accurate bones indefinitely.?

Fossilized, 'Pompeii' Forest Discovered Under Ash

News | Evolution

A preserved forest has given researchers the unusual opportunity to examine an ecosystem essentially frozen in place, including plant communities and the climate

About 300 million years ago, volcanic ash buried a tropical forest located in what is now Inner Mongolia, much like it did the ancient Roman city of Pompeii.

This preserved forest has given researchers the unusual opportunity to examine an ecosystem essentially frozen in place by a natural disaster, giving them a detailed look at ancient plant communities and a glimpse at the ancient climate.

This ancient, tropical forest created peat, or moist, acidic, decaying plant matter. Over geologic time, the peat deposits were subjected to high pressure and became coal, which is found in the area.???

The volcano appears to have left a layer of ash that was originally 39 inches (100 centimeters) thick.

"This ash-fall buried and killed the plants, broke off twigs and leaves, toppled trees, and preserved the forest remains in place within the ash layer," the authors, led by Jun Wang of the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology in China, wrote in an article published Monday (Feb. 20) in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. ?

The ash layer dated to about 298 million years ago, early in the Permian Period, when the supercontinent Pangea was coming together.

The researchers examined three sites with a total area of 10,764 square feet (1,000 square meters) near Wuda, China. At these sites, they counted and mapped the fossilized plants. The tallest trees that formed the upper canopy?species in the genera Sigillaria and Cordaites?grew to 82 feet (25 meters) or more. Lower down, tree ferns formed another canopy. A group of now-extinct, spore-producing trees called Noeggerathiales and palm-like cycads grew below these, they found. [Image Gallery: A Petrified Forest]

"It's marvelously preserved," University of Pennsylvania paleobotanist and study researcher Hermann Pfefferkorn said in a press release issued by the university. "We can stand there and find a branch with the leaves attached, and then we find the next branch and the next branch and the next branch. And then we find the stump from the same tree. That's really exciting."

(AP) ? Jeremy Lin's first NBA coach was practically gushing as he listed the qualities that have made the former Harvard guard a star in New York.

The same ones, by the way, that would still have him riding Golden State's bench.

And that couldn't even get him drafted.

And that got him cut twice and demoted to the minors four times.

In fact, Keith Smart isn't the only guy who didn't see what he had with Lin.

"It's good (the) Monday morning quarterbacks are here now," Smart said, "but no one could have predicted this guy being this big."

Almost no one, anyway. Even Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni had so many questions about Lin's defense and shooting that he only gave him a chance when the team was desperate. Now Lin's control of the offense draws comparisons to Phoenix star Steve Nash.

But before picking on all the NBA people who missed on Lin, start with those hundreds of coaches who wouldn't even give him a scholarship to play in college.

"I couldn't even get some D-III schools to look at me," he said Thursday during an ESPN Radio interview.

How can that be? How did so many teams on so many levels pass on a guy who scored more points in his first five NBA starts than any player since the 1976-77 merger with the ABA?

"This is hard to predict," D'Antoni said. "It's like winning the lottery. You buy a ticket, you hope, but there's no guarantee it's going to happen."

It sure didn't in Golden State or Houston, where the teams liked Lin but had too many guards in front of him. And it wouldn't have happened in New York if Baron Davis had gotten over his back woes sooner, or if Iman Shumpert didn't hurt his knee in the season opener, or if any of the three point guards D'Antoni tried first had been able to run his offense properly.

It took all those circumstances to get Lin to New York, then onto the court, which is why Smart and Minnesota director of basketball operations Rob Babcock both called it a "perfect storm."

"This one is just an absolutely amazing one," Babcock said. "There's always players that slip through the cracks and we certainly miss on a lot of guys. But I think missing is kind of a little bit of a misnomer there. It's not that we miss so much as it's the guy hasn't had the opportunity or been in the right situation that fits his skill level, the right coach that fits his style and temperament, and the player hasn't quite developed the confidence to go out and do what he is capable of doing."

He's been so good that the NBA added him Thursday to the roster of players for the Rising Stars Challenge at All-Star weekend. He wasn't among the original 18 players who were chosen but now will play in the Feb. 24 game of rookies and second-year players.

The Warriors liked Lin, a native of Northern California, enough to give him a two-year deal. But Smart had a high-scoring backcourt with Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry, not to mention backups Reggie Williams and Acie Law. So the Warriors got Lin into only 29 games last season while sending him to Reno for three stints in the NBA Development League.

They cut him in December when they were trying to sign center DeAndre Jordan away from the Clippers, and Lin was discouraged when he was a claimed by a Houston team that he said had six point guards in training camp. The Rockets cut him after two weeks, and though current point guard Kyle Lowry was an All-Star candidate, general manager Daryl Morey recently wrote on Twitter that he regretted giving up Lin.

There's plenty of similar mea culpas being made around the NBA these days.

"There was a guy we had in Cleveland, Shannon Brown, and he went on with the Lakers and won two or three championships and was a big-time contributor for them," Lakers coach Mike Brown said. "That's one of the first guys that comes to mind, but I'm sure there were other guys that we had that you let go and they went and had success other places."

But what makes Lin so different is that so many teams had multiple chances to grab him.

Instead, many passed on him twice in the 2010 draft. He was on the waiver wire twice in December. But teams simply hadn't seen him enough, given he played only 284 minutes in the NBA last season.

Perhaps they didn't know he worked in the offseason with a shooting coach to correct a perimeter game that was a weakness. Or weren't aware that he asks assistant coaches to have tape available in the morning for extra study before practicing.

Even Smart, now in Sacramento, wouldn't have pursued Lin in December had he already been in his current role.

"Again, at that time in the season, you had every NBA team could have said this is the guy. No one knew he was going to be the guy," Smart said. "Let's say now, Jeremy Lin is available now. You have everyone knocking on the door. But at that particular time, he was just another released player, free agent, let's take a chance on him. That's where he was."

But there were indicators Lin might be ready for breakthrough in New York.

The Knicks, like Smart's Warriors, run a pick-and-roll system, so Lin naturally picked up the offense. That's why, D'Antoni has said, teams ideally draft players suited for their style.

So, if nothing else, Lin's story provides a lesson to the many scouts lining up to look at all those stars from Kentucky, Syracuse, Ohio State and the other big programs.

Better not forget about the little guys.

"(Lin's) on his way toward a lifetime career now because he's managing to master playing basketball in the Mecca of basketball and playing very well in it," Smart said.
